Summer is the best time of the year. Carmel and I went down to Stagg Cycles and bought ourselves a couple of shiny new bikes, last week, and have been making the best of the brief good weather. Biking in to work and back, every dry day, is a treat in Ireland.
Unfortunately, this exercise no longer counts as ‘training’ for the Wicklow Challenge. Due to circumstances beyond our control, Team Adventure has had to disband.
The efforts to date have, however, been fruitful. We wouldn’t trade a minute. Approximately £600.00 were raised for the causes. It may be a drop in a miserable bucket, but will provide someone with that much more assistance than they had before. Also, for each of the team members, we’ve won some tough physical accomplishments and gathered some excellent memories.
Just wait until next year!
The events which forced the team to disband? Well, let’s blame the economic downturn that followed the dot-bomb bust. The company that I work for, Interactive Enterprise, unleashed its first ever round of redundancies last week. That same week, Marconi announced that 4000 jobs would go, in the UK, and Intel (here in Ireland) announced a sudden stop on all production for three weeks. Though the Irish economy grew an incredible 11% last year, the whole picture is not all rosy. Many good friends have been affected.
The moral of the story: work hard for the boss at the office- but make sure you walk out of those doors, every single day, with a new skill or piece of knowledge for yourself.
Well, to liven up this grim news.... Check out the floating DFA! I’ve made a recent semi-useful discovery: stupid web tricks! It’s a site from CNET that offers all sorts of Javascript to add strange, new forms of life to the Internet. Some of the tricks are actually useful for professional sites. Others- like this flying DFA- are just goofy. If you’re interested in page authoring, though- definitely check it out.
Speaking of authoring.... Mick has been busy at his hobby, in June. Took the time to write two stories. One is a humorous piece that explains why our Stone Age ancestors abandoned thousands of generations as hunter-gatherers to form communities around certain locations in Mesopotamia. Doesn’t sound like a particularly humorous topic? Read it anyway! It explains Vampires!
The other yoke is more serious, though hopefully not boring.
Once again, thanks to all my mates in the Imaginaries co-op, and in the group that meets at Maynooth College. (Insert smarmy, humble sentiment here. Real "feel good" Hollywood stuff--- "Aw, shucks, coach, it warn’t nuthin... I did it for the team!")
Peace
