Good Things

The world is full of amazing people, places, events and ideas. Check out the links below and on the carrousel at right to make your life that much richer.

Amigos:
  • My sister Erin's home page in Tallahassee, Florida! (And another cool pic!)

  • Lara hates Bad Clam Chowder.

  • Technology:
  • The Microsoft Developers' Network have a Web Workshop with a library of code and examples. This has proved a wealth of information on XML, DHTML, and other technologies. One word of warning: Netscape users will find themselves bumped to a less helpful page.

  • Tutorials, references, news, free updates--- I have learned a lot at Internet.com. Check it out.

  • The only Page Editor that I can stand-- Macromedia's Dreamweaver -- makes it dead easy to construct brilliant sites. This intuitive tool automates layout and JavaScript code that normally takes a good while's eyeballing and poking.

  • Hardware trouble? Questions? Go to Tom's Hardware Guide.

  • Another excellent source of information: ZDnet.

  • Ireland and Economics:
  • Guinness.

  • There is much more coming out of Ireland these days than that Heavenly Beverage. The Irish Trade Board has a site that serves as a good introduction to the current (booming!) economy.

  • As an example of the Celtic Tiger's health, visit the Irish Financial Sector page to learn about an industry that has grown from obscurity to employ 50,000 people.

  • One major engine of our current prosperity is our booming software industry. After the US, Ireland exports more software than any other country on earth. Check out some facts and figures, and find details on the more than 700 companies operating here, from the National Software Directorate.

  • . . . Lastly but certainly not least, in a section about economics and finance comes the important question: Is your boss a greedy scumbag? You can find out at Executive PayWatch.

  • History:
  • Two hundred years ago, back in Napoleonic War days, Ireland attempeted a rebellion against English rule. If you have read Thomas Flannagan's political thriller/war story/romance The Year of the French, you know this story. If you haven't, check out the 1798 Rebellion Home Page.

  • Stories:
  • A page about T. Corraghessan Boyle, one of my two favorite authors. His materal is very enjoyable, very funny.

  • A page dedicated to Charles Baxter, my other favorite writer. Very wise.

  • Mark Childress wrote an engrossing, amazing book called Tender which I have been recommending for years but can still not say enough about. It gets straight into the world and into the heart of a lad from Tupelo named "Leroy." (as in le Roi, "The King.") Brilliant. Uh-huh-huh.

  • Not all talent is on pedistals or even booksheles. I enjoy much of the imaginative fiction found in amature venues like the Imaginaries Writers' Co-op.

  • Music:
  • If you haven't been told about They Might Be Giants, you should be! These quirky, imaginative lads from Lincoln, Mass. are currently my favorite band.

  • Cowboy Mouth is a pop band from New Orleans. I used to keep them in heavy rotation when I worked at KNSU FM 91.5 in Thibideux. Since I've been here in Dublin, I've been listening to them often, and my appreciation has really grown. Thank you, Cowboy Mouth.

  • Hope:
  • Teach For America is an Americorps-associated organization that exists to better the education of students in under-resourced rural and urban locations. Through TFA's placement, I spent three years teaching special education in inner-city Los Angeles and "down the bayou" in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana.

  • Take a few minutes' break with St. Martin de Porres.

  • Not all companies are heartless machines that exploit without giving, Karl. The Hunger Site is sponsored by a number of corporations who donate a meal to the UN World Food Program for every 'hit' this page receives per day.
