The Real Rebus

Webmaster Note: Why did Ian Rankin name his universally-popular detective "John Rebus"? The fact that there was a man named "Rebus" who lived on a road named "Rankin" in Edinburgh may be true, but is pure coincidence. The real reason: ol' Ian just loved puzzles.
Well, to tickle Rankin's drunken Scottish heart, my unruly review of Rebus's ninth installment, The Hanging Garden, takes the form of.... Rebuses! Answers are at the bottom of the page.

Rebus is mad popular! They even brought out a beer and a whiskey to celebrate 20 years of Rebus.
