Types of Computers: PCs

The world was introduced to Personal Computers (PCs) by IBM in 1981. Since that time, they have spread into homes, schools and offices in ever-increasing numbers.

Their power and capabilities have increased, as well. As progress marches on, software programs have been released that demand higher and higher performance from the computer system. After a few years, the computer that was once cutting-edge may not be able to "cut the mustard"!

However:

  • PCs are composed of a collection of electronic components (parts).
  • PCs are made to industry standards.
  • Many of these components can be removed and replaced with newer and more powerful items.
  • So... if a part is broken or outdated, PCs can be fixed and upgraded!

  •

Note: You may find more information about the different components that make up a PC on Mick's System page.

This is a picture of a Gateway PC that Mick bought in 1999. Since then, he has replaced a faulty hard drive, upgraded the video card, motherboard, and processor, added more memory... and he is certain to keep happily tinkering away with it as technology improves!
